Life...

Sometimes life can seem really difficult, everywhere you turn its as if nothing is going your way. The motivation to move on with life diminishes...one just feels like giving up! Everything seems sad and depressing. Its at times like these that the Quran and words of Ahlul Bayt(s.a) help. One sermon from Nahjul Balagha that has really helped me at times is "Al-Khutba Al-Qasi'ah". I love the following excerpt from the sermon:

If Allah, the Glorified, had placed His sacred House and His great signs among plantations, streams, soft and level plains, plenty of trees, an abundance of fruits, a thick population, close habitats, golden wheat, lush gardens, green land, watered plains, thriving orchards and crowded streets, the amount of recompense would have decreased because of the lightness of the trial. If the foundation on which the House is borne and the stones with which it has been raised had been of green emerald and red rubies, and there had been brightness and effulgence, then this would have lessened the action of doubts in the breasts, would have dismissed the effect of Satan's activity from the hearts, and would have stopped the surging of misgivings in people. But Allah tries His creatures by means of different troubles, wants them to render worship through hardships and involves them in distresses, all in order to extract out vanity from their hearts, to settle down humbleness in their spirits and to make all this an open door for His favours and an easy means for His forgiveness (for their sins). Caution against rebellion and oppressiveness

Finally!

So after like a gazillion years i finally decided to start a blog. Although i kept on posting stuff and notes on different social networking sites...i never did get around to writing formally for a blog. So dont get too weirded out if you see so many posts on my blog in a single day...they are all old posts that i imported here...:P.

Living in Pakistan, its only through writing that one can vent their frustrations otherwise it can eat you up from inside. There is so much wrong with the current Pakistani society that i cant even begin to explain it BUT i will leave that for another day as i gotta run and do some errands now...so stay tuned for more...:P

First class or second class?!

As a kid i was under the illusion that being a Pakistani meant that i was allowed freedom in this country, that i would be allowed to practice my religion, that i would be allowed to air my opinions...AFTER all Pakistan was meant to be an Islamic country that would give the sub continent's Muslims freedom, at least that was what Quaid envisioned!

BUT the sugar coating slowly melts away when you look around...:/!!!
A few years back I went to a school trip to badshahi mosque happily admiring our cultural heritage...well what do i see written on a fountain there...i am sure intelligent people would be able to guess...the usual statement accusing certain Muslims to be kafir...>:!!!

So lets fast forward to current times...and what do we see happening...everyday people come up and kill shias in majalis, imambargahs, mosques...they haven't even left funerals.

Is this what being a first class citizen means?!

Not being able to practice your faith?
Shutting down all shia channels?
Discriminating them in uniz, jobs etc?
Killing them in their places of Ibadat?

Be fair and evaluate!!!AND then people have the audacity to say...BE Patriotic...Love this country...>:...you are a first class citizen here...look how they treat Muslims there...look how they kill them?!

TAKE OF YOUR ROSE TINTED GLASSES PEOPLE AND LOOK REAL HARD AND THEN ANSWER...:*(.

Too bad these people haven't left anyplace for us...non-pakistanis discriminate us because we have a green passport and we are Muslims...OUR own country discriminates us...can someone tell me where we go...:*(...?!

To do this, go to "notes" under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people (in the right hand corner of the app), then click publish.

Eposide 1:Sakina’s trip to *Land of the pure*

Day 1--1500hrs PST
She was suddenly jolted out of her sleep....she looked out the window and the plane was about to land. Her heart soared with elation...she was finally returning to Pakistan after so many years. "Finally", she thought, "I'll be able to blend in with my hijab and abaya!" With these thoughts she got off the plane...and started moving towards the exit, anxiously looking for her aunt and her family. She couldn't wait to meet her cousins.

Finally she spotted them, and stopped short with confusion in her mind. There they were, a women with blond streaked hair, glasses stuck on her head, and shalwar 3 inches above her ankles....with astonishment she turned towards her cousin...a slim girl wearing a short sleeveless shalwar kamiz. She looked around her in confusion thinking that did I really get of the right plane.

These thoughts were driven away from her mind when her aunt embraced her in a too tight hug and over powering perfume...Ooooh my sweet heart, janni how are you?!?!...is this really you?!?!...what is this you are wearing...aren’t you sooo hot in this thing....and this hijab...? What happened sweetheart did you join some islamic cult.

She was just about to answer to this bombardment of questions when she turned her attention to the snickering coming from behind her. She turned around just in time to hear her Cousin Ali saying to his sister, Saira in not such a low whisper...Oh!!! Look our ninja cousin is here.
To which Saira replied..."yea...man and here I thought she would be this cool young hip thing coming from America....oh, what a disappointment...and what am I going to say to all my friends...I had showed off so much about my cousin coming from America.

When both of them felt Sakina’s eyes on them....they stopped talking.

Ali: "Yo! ninj...err...I mean sakina wuzzup?!?!

Saira: "Oh hi sakina, how are you...did your flight detour to Afghanistan?"
And both started snickering again.

Sakina was absolutely dumbfounded into quietness by their rudeness and reaction. Even in America no one had so openly made such snide comments.
"What have I got myself into now." she sighed. And slowly with these thoughts in mind trudged forward with her bags.

The Hijab Chronicles

Does any one care...?!

Whereas many from the world population face the problem of obesity...create numerous diets to shed weight...spend thousands on spas and gyms...MANY are dying from hunger....if only while eating extra or throwing food in the dustbin we could remember these people...maybe someone might not go hungry...THINK about it....!!!

******************************************
ISLAMABAD: World hunger is projected to reach a historic high in 2009 with 1,020 million people going hungry every day, according to new estimates published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Friday.

Poor global harvests were not blamed for the most recent increase in hunger but the world economic crisis that has resulted in lower incomes and increased unemployment. This has reduced access to food by the poor, the UN agency said.

This year, mainly due to the shocks of the economic crisis combined with often high national food prices, the number of hungry people is expected to grow overall by about 11 per cent, FAO projects, drawing on analysis by the US Department of Agriculture.

Almost all of the world’s undernourished live in developing countries. In Asia and the Pacific, an estimated 642 million people are suffering from chronic hunger; in Sub-Saharan Africa 265 million; in Latin America and the Caribbean 53 million; in the Near East and North Africa 42 million; and in developed countries 15 million in total.

The urban poor will probably face the most severe problems in coping with the global recession, because lower export demand and reduced foreign direct investment are more likely to hit urban jobs harder. But rural areas will not be spared. Millions of urban migrants will have to return to the countryside, forcing the rural poor to share the burden in many cases.

Unlike previous crises, developing countries have less room to adjust to the deteriorating economic conditions, because the turmoil is affecting practically all parts of the world more or less simultaneously.

The economic crisis also comes on the heel of the food and fuel crisis of 2006-08.

While food prices in world markets declined over the past months, domestic prices in developing countries came down more slowly.

They remained on average 24 percent higher in real terms by the end of 2008 compared to 2006.

For poor consumers, who spend up to 60 per cent of their incomes on staple foods, this means a strong reduction in their effective purchasing power.

It should also be noted that international food commodity prices are still 24 per cent higher than 2006 and 33 per cent higher than 2005.

Reflection of What...?!

A major question to ask ourselves is about the content being shown on TV...does it show our *progressiveness*, our Indianization or our *artistic flair*...?!
Some of the latest trends these days on TV is to show people openly swearing at each other, drinking whenever in some sorta issue, flirtations being carried out openly, reality dancing shows, vulgar jokes being cracked, no sanctity of marriage(female liking big bro but getting married to younger bro to get close to the older bro to marry him once being divorced from the younger one...:/), no level of respect between children and parents etc. The list is an extremely long one!
What is all this and how will it affect our society? Has any of the media related people like respected writers, artists, directors ever given a thought to it? How is it shaping our future generations and contributing to the current social dilemmas and loss of national identity?

Can we as the next generation get together and boycott such stuff...or is it us that push up the GRP's?!
Please think about it!

Confused Media?

What exactly is our culture?

Hasn't this question been doing rounds since so many years...BUT we have failed to get any solid answer up till now? Now instead of helping clear this confusion, the media is adding to it.

A few days back on valentines day, the media was obsessively showing stuff related to the event. They went to the extent of setting up dates between actors and audience...! AND now on eid-e milad un Nabi(saww) the same channels are having naat khawans as their guests, all adorned in dupattas, males with beards etc.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel the contradiction...*huh*?! Imagine i am a non-Muslim looking in on the Islamic teachings and culture...what do i see? On one side i claim to be a Muslim following the teachings of Holy Prophet(saww) and on the other hand i support events related to valentines. wouldn't that person logically conclude that this is what Islam promotes?

Seriously when will we wake up?! Either we can stop acting as ambassadors of Islam and distorting the image or we can realize for once what is our true identity and choose that instead of confusing everyone around us. This especially goes for our MEDIA!

Sliding Morality?

Its amazing how the Pakistani society has changed over the years yet remained the same. From the dupattas sliding from the head to the base of the head, distance between males and females becoming reduced much has changed and become accepted in the media. These might be just random stuff which were destined to change after Zia...BUT whats more disturbing is the way the morning and Live shows are becoming. This is the second time that i saw random guys calling and singing songs for the female guests and anchor.I mean what is happening...how is it right for some strange guy to call up females and start singing songs with weird lyrics...*nuts*...!!! Aren't they just making this practice acceptable...where has the respect one shows for females gone?

The irony is that this superficial modernism is progressing at a rather fast pace where as the reality on ground remains the same...honor killings, domestic violence, no rights whatsoever are still as rampant as they were when the media was all hush hush.

The question remains that till when will we improve just superficially...from the concept of independence to the basic rights of humans? when will the time come and we will realize that we need to do more...go much deeper.

OR might we just change the name of the country to superficilistan...since the country is becoming acceptable towards name changing...!!!

Using Bad Language

An increasing problem that can be seen in the society today is the use of bad language. Somehow it has become so common that it baffles the mind. You can see little children use all the swear words possible without a thought as to the effect it might have on the soul. People who would normally have a very polite and sweet speech on a slight provocation start using all the bad words. Examples of this could be seen on roads in traffic jams, jokes between friends, cursing enemies or people one is in conflict with!

Can anyone tell me how it justifies using bad language while even cursing enemies...is this what the Holy Prophet(pbuh) and his Ahlul Bayt(s.a) taught us?There are many other ways to show displeasure or anger which can be seen from the lives of Holy Prophet(pbuh) and his Ahlul Bayt(s.a).

How can we use such words and then utter holy names, stand in front of Allah(swt) and recite words of Holy Quran from the same tongue?! Please Ponder upon this and whenever an urge occurs to use such words, think what Imam-e-Zamana(ajtf) would be feeling? Would you use the same language if he were sitting in your company?!

Black Hole by Arries

The power went out,
In this harsh, dreary storm.
The darkness suffocates me.
The walls are closing in.
There is no light,
In the tunnel at the end.
Fake smiles,
Weave in and out,
Of my twisted mind.
The voice teases me,
It laughs and cries,
Burns and bites.
I am trapped alone,
Solitude is my friend.
Tick tock goes the clock,
Drip drop goes the rain.
Time is too slow,
Life is too fast.
Both will surely drive me insane.

The Characteristics of the Companions of Imam Mahdi (A.S.)

Imam Ali (a.s.) has narrated the a certain criteria to be fulfilled by individuals for allegiance to Imam Al-Asr(ajtf).  The companions will testify in front of Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s) to abide by the below mentioned provisions:

Imam (a.t.f.s.) will take allegiance from his companions on these criteria (mentioned earlier) and once the companions fulfill the criteria, then Imam (a.t.f.s.) will remain with them and spend his life alongside them. This highlights the intense love and affection of Imam (a.t.f.s.) for his companions.

Beautiful words...

"One went to the door of the Beloved and knocked. A voice asked, 'Who is there?'He answered, 'It is I.'

The voice said, 'There is no room for Me and Thee.'The door was shut.

After a year of solitude and deprivation he returned and knocked.A voice from within asked, 'Who is there?'The man said, 'It is Thee.'The door was opened for him."

By Rumi

Why the silence?

These questions are for all my non-shia brothers and sisters...WAIT...let me edit and add some Shia's to this list as well:

How may of you know that a place named Parachinar exists in Pakistan?
How many know that taliban have been killing shia's there for a very long time now...the place is besieged and there is no supply of food, water or medicine for them?
How many know that even now fighting is going on there, more than 25 shia men have been killed and their families displaced...the village over taken by the taliban?
How many know of all the kids and women that have died there and are still dying?
Every heart aches for kashmiris and palestinians...all of you sit and curse indian army and israeli's for their oppression....what about the oppression going on in our own backyard?

Are these people not worth a thought 'cuz they are shia? is their blood not of value? Why doesn't the media show such an important issue that is taking place inside the country? how come all the leaders and religious scholars are mute on the subject?!

WHY?!

Everyday the level of my dissappointment in us as a nation reaches a new level...the pit seems to have no bottom.

May Allah(swt) have mercy on us...ameen.

Patience Of Imam Reza (a.s)

During the period Imam Reza (a.s) resided in Merv as the heir apparent of the caliph there was an Abbaside leader who was very jealous of him. He was always waiting for an opportunity to degrade the Imam in the eyes of Mamun, but he did not get any chance. One day he came to the Imam and criticizing the Shiite religion began to foul-mouth the Imam.
The Imam asked him, “O Man! After all, what is your aim with this?” “To insult you!” he replied.

The Imam said, “The special servants of Allah are never humiliated.” “I do not consider you among the chosen servants of Allah,” he said.

The Imam said, “When did I ask you to consider me thus? But the One Whose servant I am considers me thus.”

He said, “Show me a miracle and I will accept it.” The Imam said, “Is it anything less than a miracle that you are talking in such a bad way and I am maintaining patience and self-control? Can I not complain to the ruler and have you punished severely?”

Hearing this the man became regretful and fell down at the feet of the Imam and said, “From today I have become your devotee. I had come with the intention to make you behave arrogantly with me so that I can fight you and defame you in the town. But I have become a devotee of your good behavior. The fact is that being on such an important position the patience and forbearance you have shown is impossible by anyone else.”

Who is narrow minded...Islam or you...?!

According to a tradition one day Holy Prophet(pbuh) was sitting in the mosque when a lady entered. She said salam to the Prophet(pbuh) and said that i am single and want to get married.
The holy Prophet(pbuh) said ok and asked the sahaba siting their that who would like to marry her.One person got up and said he would.
The Prophet(pbuh) asked if he had any money for mehr, the man said i just live in that hut nearby and dont have much money. The prophet(pbuh) then said...then how will you marry and he sat down. Once again he(pbuh) raised the same question. Again the same person got up...the prophet(pbuh) said ok you can marry her but tell me if you have learned the knowledge that i have been imparting...he said yes. So the prophet(pbuh) said that you can give that as the mehr.

Now ask yourself that what is narrow minded...islam or us or the society that we have created?!
A woman was easily able to enter the mosque...so Islam doesnt restrict women...its us who have closed off females from mosques.
Secondly the woman was easily able to enter while other male sahaba were sitting and talk to the prophet(pbuh)...if these days we cant do the same with alims...whose to be blamed...religion or the society?
Finally she was able to talk about marriage openly and holy prophet(pbuh) answered.

Imagine if the same incident took place today...what would such a woman be labeled? a outspoken woman without any level of modesty?
So then whose to be blamed religion or the society we have created?!

Amanat-e Khuda....a perspective to live a peaceful life

In a recent majlis ayt. aqeel ul gharvi told a very simple and beautiful way through which we all could lead peacful and conflict free lives and i thought it was worth sharing...:)

One of the most effective ways to make tauheed a part of your life is to consider everything a safekeeping or amant of Allah(swt). For example:

1. Parents should think that their children are amant of Allah(swt) so while taking care of them they should not think that later on in life i would be getting something from him/her. They should think that the money given to them is also an amant of Allah(swt) so they should spend one amanat on taking care of another amanat. This way when they would even be kissing the face of their child, they would be doing 'ibadat'.

2. Husband and wife should also think the same; wife should take husband as 'abd-e Khuda' and husband wife as 'kaneez-e khuda'. So when both interact with each other they should think that Allah(swt) gave them each other as amanat and so the other should be treated as such. If the duties assigned are not fulfilled properly, they would be doing na shukri with the amnat of Allah(swt). In such a manner all acts would also become ibadat.

These are just two examples but this concept could be applied to all the areas of life and to all the people one comes in contact with. So next time you hurt someone or fight with someone....think what you are really doing? And if you are taking proper care of the amanats giving to to you by Allah(swt).

Self-Struggle[Jihad-e Akbar]

In order to defeat the self and to control passions we must fight hard by strictly following the commands of Prophet (S) and Infallible Imams (A); with the help of reason must march forward preventing transgressions and encroachment of the self, and  destroying the roots of his forces, so that reason could take over the power, and by taking inspirations from religious law could guide us upon the path of human perfection leading towards God's-Nearness.

We must know while confronting self, compromise and piece settlement is not possible, and what is required is a devastating blow making him crippled permanently from plotting any further conspiracies. In order to achieve happiness and salvation there is no other alternative except to follow this course, and because, of this reason struggle against the self has been called in traditions as -"Greater-Crusade" (Jihad-e-Akbar). Here we would quote few examples from the Commander of the Faithful Imam' Ali (A):

"Take over the possession of yourself--through continuous struggle.”
                                                                                              -Ghararal-Hukm, vol. l, p-131.

And said:

”Fight and dominate over self’s whims and passions. Because otherwise if they succeeded in making you their prisoner -they will treat you in a most humiliating manner destroying you eventually.
   -Gharar al-Hukm, vol. 1, p-138.

And said:

"A wise man keeps himself engaged in struggle against his self, thus, reforming and preventing him from indulging into passions and amusements, and in this manner subdues him ultimately taking over his possession. Such a wise person is so must preoccupied in his self-refinement that he is totally detached with the world, whatever it contains and its dwellers."
  -Gharar al-Hukm, vol. 1, p-237.

And said:

"That the Prophet (S) dispatched his soldiers to battle front to fight against the enemy. When the soldiers returned triumphant, the Prophet said: ' Congratulations! For those who have successfully completed the "Minor-Struggle " (Jihad-e-Asghar), but they have yet to engage themselves into Greater-Struggle (Jihad-e-Akbar) '. He was asked: 'Oh Prophet of God! What is the Greater- Struggle?”
'Struggle against the self.’ Replied the Prophet (S).”
-Wasail al-Shia, vol. 2, p-124.

"There are six traits that must not be found in a true believer [of complete faith],

1. viciousness and ill-temperedness,

2. miserliness,

3. obstinacy,

4. dishonesty,

5. jealousy,

6. oppression [of others]."

Mola Imam Jaafer Al Sadiq (a.s)!

Who says...?!

People are always pointing fingers at Islam and saying its such an old and impractical religion...how can it even help you in the modern 21st century. But now after studying business for 1 1/2 years i realize how far from the truth this statement is.
Whenever i sit in different course classes i can't help but be wonderfully surprised that half the theories, advice etc the management, brand, leadership et al gurus churn out are the same i have read in Islamic books or heard in majalis.

Below i am writing certain examples that i have practically come across:

In every class the teachers insist that a good communicator and a great leader is one who listens 90% of the time...now isn't that what we have been hearing esp. through a saying of Imam Ali(a.s) where he states that as someone's intellect increases he speaks less.

The other day our teacher was saying that non-verbal communication sometimes becomes so great that a leader and follower don't even need to communicate verbally but can just talk with their minds...AND here we are wondering how we can communicate with Imam-e-Waqt(ajtf) when we can't see him!

One marketing teacher was saying that feet can be a very attractive part of females and this point is actually exploited by marketers to advertise their products...So isn't that enough to make us understand why covering feet is part of shari`e pardah?!

One teacher was convincing the whole class that males and females are inherently different and that it has been proven scientifically...SO why do we find it so hard to digest, when Islam assigns different roles to both of 'em?!

Why is it so easy to believe the professor when he states that according to one behavior its the child's first few years that really form his/her personality BUT hard to understand when Islam tells us to mold our child's personality in the first few years and imbibe good Islamic values in him/her!

I think we really need to slip out of our stupor and try to realize the intellectual depth and richness we are provided with in the form of Holy Quran and Ahl-ul-Bait(s.a). If only we would have used this knowledge before it was converted and corrupted by all the unethical practices we wouldn't have to come up with terms like corporate social responsibility or end up with corporate scams and be bombarded with unethical marketing.

May Allah(swt) guide us all

Amen
